IFA becomes the Launching Pad for Samsung’s New Mobile Tablet Hybrid

Last Thursday IFA was held in Berlin, and the event witnessed the introduction of a tablet mobile hybrid from Samsung. The newly launched device is two times the size of a normal Smartphone and half the size of a regular tablet PC. This made Samsung develop an altogether new category of technology.

As informed by the executive VP and Global head of marketing and sales for Samsung, DJ Lee, this new device has been created to meet the specific requirements of a market segment that carries mini notebooks to make note of ideas. To this end, the hybrid device features a stowaway stylus to help users in drawing, note taking and taking screen captures.

In addition, it is an Android device running on Gingerbread 2.3. Other features include a 5.3 inches touch screen that is 1280 x 800 Super AMOLED, a removable 2500mAh battery, dual cameras at 2MP and 8MP, HSPA+ and LTE and a 1.4 GHz processor. It is quite thin at 9.65mm and light as well, weighing a mere 178gms.
The Android OS in the device has seven home screens and TouchWiz to optimise the advantages offered by the stylus device (named ‘S Pen’ by the manufacturers). A native calendar, a to-do list app and an S Planner are some of the programmes included. Furthermore, the appointments can be dragged and dropped in a hassle-free manner without the need of opening up an entry.
Samsung is still undecided about the place of introducing Galaxy Note first. Hence, it will take some time for us to know about its availability in the UK.

London Theatre to Respond to the Phone Hacking Scandal

Now here is an event you would not get to witness everyday. Going by a recent news item in Guardian, a London based theatre is contemplating putting up six plays based on the recent phone hacking scandal at the Theatre503.

Theatre503 is well known for the fresh and newly written presentation that it brings. These plays will be showcased under a collective title – ‘Hacked.’ Each one will present a story based on the messages collected from the hacked mobile phone handsets.

To steer clear from any controversy, the phones have been procured from willing volunteers, ready to share their voicemails knowing that the data will be forwarded to six playwrights for penning stories based on it. The volunteers have agreed to not press for any deletions or censorship of the messages. Every piece of information will be up for use, literally.

As expressed by Derek Bond, the associate director at Theater503, they were apprehensive about the idea of staging these plays inspired directly from the hacking scandal. Perhaps, a different theatre would have done it in the future, that too taking a verbatim, courtroom approach. However, they wanted to actually go to the roots of people’s outrage. It was not just celebrities, but missing teenagers, grieving parents and almost everyone who was affected. What if it was you?

The volunteers’ names will be kept a secret, even to the playwrights. All the names will be scrambled before handing over the data. On the creative front, the writers have been instructed to not curb their imagination in any way. They must not allow the ‘truth’ to come in the way of a great story.

Micro HDMI Support on Windows Phone Mango

HDMI Support was clearly one of the crucial missing components in the previous versions of the Windows Phone 7.  Undoubtedly, the platform was extremely capable of supporting and recording videos but it did not offer easy ways to share the content with a close by HDTV device.  But things are going to change with Acer M310.

This new device is expected to feature not only the new Windows Phone operating system (which is code named Mango), but will also feature the micro HDMI output, which was only found in some Android handsets till now.

As per the reports, the other upcoming Windows Phone device called HTC Eternity will come equipped with DLNA wireless sharing and the new micro HDMI port.

The prototype of the Acer M310 was displayed at the Tech Ed conference recently, as reported by the Windows Phone NZ blog.

The feedback on the new handset was overall positive, as people liked the black shiny look as well as the bevelled edges.  And the video output to HDMI was something that was never seen earlier on Windows Phone handsets.  It also includes the DLNA support over Wi-Fi to play a network connected Xbox, TV or any other device which supports DLNA.   Other features like the 8GB storage capacity on Acer M310 are similar to the existing Windows Phones.

It is also mentioned on the blog that we will be receiving more information on various aspects including possible release locations and dates, as the production for new device is approaching final stages.
