St. John’s Cathedral in‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands just underwent a long phase of restoration that lasted for around 12 years.  During this phase, the reinforcement work on statues was done and the many adornments as well as statues all over the cathedral were cleaned and restored.  The statues that were severely damaged were replaced too.

An interesting development during this restoration phase was an addition of a new angel, which is quite different from its counterpart statues.  It depicts modern day beauty and even holds a one-button cell phone to her ear as if chatting with God.  This contemporary angel is one of the 25 new angels and is shown as wearing jeans and is created by Tony Mooy, a sculptor from Amersfoort.

Many other contemporary elements too have been added while restoring the cathedral apart from this modern day angel.  One of the additions is a stained window made of glass which portrays the attack scenes of New York’s Twin Towers.

Also known as a “whopper monument” or a “Kanjermonument”, the origin of St. John’s Cathedral can be traced back to as early as 1220.  Including the expansion project that was undertaken in 1300s, the cathedral took more than 200 years to get completed from the date of its initial construction.

Built in a gothic theme, every part of the cathedral is covered with statues and decoration.  Some statues are placed in such a way that they are not even visible to all.

Considering that Seville’s Saint Isidore has already been declared internet’s Patron Saint, could the newest angel of St. John’s be the mobile’s Patron Saint?
