Rumour or Truth: Microsoft launching Windows Phone 7.5 Soon?

The entire cell phone community is abuzz with the news, or should I say, a rumour still, that Microsoft will soon be launching the next version of Windows Phone 7 operating system early.

“Mango” is the code word for this new version (7.5).  GoMo News traced this early release date, which most likely is 1st September 2011, to Pocket Lint.

The date, as per the speculation, has been fixed keeping in mind the forthcoming IFA show to be held in Berlin.  Electronics including cell phones and other gadgets are displayed at this event.  IFA’s kick-off date is 2nd September 2011.

Another speculation, which goes very well with the topic of our discussion, is the launch of Nokia’s first Windows Phone 7 cell phone around mid-September.

IFA attendance list, including not only Microsoft and Nokia, but also LG, HTC and Acer, further backs up all the speculation and rumor.  All these companies have a keen interest in promoting the brand new operating system.

Two things work against this rumor if it most likely is true.  The first one is about the announcement made by Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer.  As told by him to us, not the industry, the release date will most probably be around mid-October, and going by the past, Microsoft generally does not come out early.

Second thing is the forthcoming Nokia World 2011 event, scheduled for 26th and 27th October 2011.  This seems to be a more appropriate place, as many of us feel, for the launch of the new Nokia WP7 than Berlin.

iPad 2 Displays: LGD to Samsung

DigiTimes has recently reported that Apple has changed its display panel providers ever since LGD (LG Display) dropped the ball.  LGD until now was the largest suppliers of Apple iPad 2 displays.  It just does not matter to us as customers as it will not make much of a difference.

LG is out and Samsung as well as Chimei Innolux are in.  It certainly is good news for both of them as the two companies will now be replacing LGD.  Samsung, which until now was providing only one million displays on a monthly basis, has already doubled its production for the month of July.

Samsung indeed has benefitted, but the real benefit has gone in favour of Chimei Innolux which can now leverage its relationship with iPad manufacturers (Foxconn) and subsequently increase their share in the production of iPad displays.

Apple was struggling to meet its production rates during the high demand period when iPad 2 was initially released.  After the launch, the sales figures for the first quarter were much lower than anticipated.  Even then, Apple was able to ship more than 9 million iPad 2s in the previous quarter.  It even brought down its shipping estimates to a minimum of “within 24 hours”.

This indeed is an excellent time to buy the iPad 2 if you have an interest, as not only is the shortage problem solved, but even the shipping times are much shorter than before.

While Sony and many other companies are busy figuring out ways to rival this gadget, no one yet has been able to deliver an iPad killer.

Gmail’s Google Voice Now Coming to UK

The Google Voice blog reports that this new feature provided by Gmail allows one to make really cheap international calls and is being rolled out to many new countries in the coming few days.  Once completed, you will need to purchase credit in GBP (Pounds Sterling) using which calls can be made in 38 various languages in more than 150 countries.

In the US, this facility has been available for quite a while now, though in a very limited capacity and calls from both landline and mobile were costing as low as 2 cents (landline) and 10 cents (mobile) for every minute.

Google Voice works in a very simple way: in order to make a call, you just have to go through your respective Gmail account.  It is absolutely a free service and no connection or subscription fees are associated with it.  One only needs to pay for the time that is used.

The project manager at Google Voice, Pierre Lebeau made a statement that they are always aiming to make it easier and more convenient for people to get connected, whether it means chatting, sending an email or even vide chatting so that people whom you care about can be reached from right inside your Gmail.

Since the changes are in the implementation phase, a green phone icon will appear right over the chat feature in your mailbox as soon as it becomes available.  Just as it is with all other services in UK, the costs associated will be little higher but much better than BT or other mobile service provider.
