Apple certainly has one thing going for it which is its ability to bundle up its mobile phone together with a mobile OS.  Unfortunately, Google does not possess that.  Android undoubtedly is a strong OS and till date, has relied upon hardware which is manufactured by other companies, one of them being Motorola.

Google, with this acquisition, will not only be able to design but also manufacture its own hardware.  We can now expect new tablets and SmartPhones to be created, which will be designed specifically to work seamlessly with the Android OS.

The acquisition, in Silicon Valley, is gathering lots of attention as it is one of the biggest since 2008, and moreover, the biggest acquisition ever for Google.

Acquiring Motorola Mobility will place Google in a strong stand to defend itself in patent wars since Motorola will bring along with it rights to more than 17,000 patents.

Some underlying concerns too have come to the fore amidst all the good news.  Analysts have predicted that companies manufacturing handsets for Android would start getting worried that Motorola will be favoured by Google and the latest features will be provided on those first.

One is yet to see what 2012 has in store for us, with Google acquiring Motorola and Microsoft teaming up with Nokia.
